A spot on analysis of Trevor-Roper's attempt to de-Scot the kilt. It sums up much of my own reaction to T-R. I am astonished that an essay so burdened with un-scholarly snark (the Highlands are a crude copy of Ireland?), internal inconsistency (a "quelt" is authentic, a kilt isn't), and basic wrong-headedness (T-R glosses the impact of the Dress Act, disregards the fact that the philabeg was made in Scotland for Scots, etc) got published, let alone managed to survive these many years.

What Hitler is getting at isn't so much that the Scots were the best fighters, but that his own nation's propaganda regarding their comic appearance was inaccurate because he and his comrades had encountered 'Tommies' and found that "those Scotsmen were not like the ones we had seen described and caricatured in the comic papers and mentioned in the communiqués." He goes no further than this. As to the 'petticoats' comment, I've only ever seen this said by our side - like all of these other nicknames. If you have evidence to the contrary, I'd love to see it.

Firstly, thanks for the correction - I have no-one proofreading this stuff but my readers.

Secondly, I like to maintain my anonymity, partly because it's just less hassle, but mostly because if I start plastering 'credentials' all over things, I'm inviting people to attack me rather than my arguments.

"Going Commando" Dates farther in the past than most people imagine. The Romans and the Scottish Warriors never used undergarments or Pants for that matter because it is a hindrance to having the ability to defecate freely while fighting.

Any Scotsman will tell you that to this day, no one wears a kilt with underwear unless it is a female...It is just not part of the uniform and weather Military or Clan, The Kilt is a uniform, nonetheless.

The first Commando units also never wore underwear for this reason. Trousers could then be pulled down at a moment notice and "there you go". In a pinch, you could defecate in the heat of battle and later, unloose your trousers leg to let some of it (Hopefully most of it) out.

If you ever had a veteran tell you, "I was so scared I that I s*** my pants!", He was truly a Veteran. All real Veterans know that this is a factual reality of intense combat. You have to be ready at all times to do anything at all on a moments notice.

Going to frat Parties "Commando" only means that you can "Go for it" (Presumably with a female "Commando") on a moments notice. I can tell you that we were using it at Croydon Hall Academy In 1966 and I know we were not the first to use this phrase because we heard it from some Ex- Royal Marine Commandos who were instructors at our School. It is a Jaunty and enterprising phrase indeed and after hearing it said in Good Spirits, who wouldn't want to "Go Commando" or indeed be a Commando!

All Hail the Commandos! The Tradition Lives on! (After all, wasn't all that College freedom what everyone was fighting for?....Eh?...(^>)
